![]() Japanese surrealist artist, Yoko D’holbachie will exhibit her debut international solo show this month at London Miles Gallery in Westbourne Studios, west London. Entitled ‘Living in Your Dreams’, the show will mark the launch of the gallery’s new space in Westbourne Studios following its relocation from nearby Notting Hill earlier this month. With a style that combines traditional Japanese anime with a distinctly western pop surrealist aesthetic (reminiscent of the godfather of pop surrealism, Ron English), D’holbachie’s first international solo show will feature ten entirely new psychedelia-inspired oil paintings. The former illustrator’s artwork invariably depicts playful, cute creatures existing in a saccharine neon world. Beneath the sweet facade however lie sinister and mysterious undertones, affected in the creature’s vacant stares and odd deformities. This uncomfortable paradox is central to D’holbachie’s exploration of the meaning of dreams, or as she might say, ‘the spirits that journey through our subconscious’. With her work previously featured on the cover of influential Lowbrow art magazine, Hi Fructose, and recently enjoying international success and a growing collector fanbase, ‘Living in Your Dreams’ promises to be an intriguing insight into the mind of the up-and-coming Japanese artist. Specialising in lowbrow and Pop Surrealist Art, the London Miles Gallery is one of the best venues in London to catch exhibitions from the leading names in these fields. Earlier this year, the gallery featured a joint show by the revered comic book artists, Jim Mahfood and Scott Campbell, and with curator Tina Zeigler's strong Californian connections, look out for plenty more artists from the US West Coast - where the movement first arose in the late ‘70s - to grace the gallery in the not-too-distant future. 'Living in Your Dreams’ is open to the public from Thursday, November 19 to Wednesday, November 25 (private view Wednesday, November 18).
